Devshayani Ekadashi is an important Hindu fasting day observed on the 11th lunar day of the bright fortnight of the Ashadha month. It marks the traditional beginning of Lord Vishnu's four-month cosmic rest, known as Chaturmas, during which he is believed to be in a state of yoga nidra. Devotees observe a strict fast and worship Lord Vishnu, seeking blessings for spiritual growth, prosperity, and the removal of sins. This day is considered highly auspicious for spiritual practices and devotion, signifying a period of introspection and self-discipline, and is typically performed as a simple home ritual.

How to Perform Devshayani Ekadashi

  1. 1 On the morning of Devshayani Ekadashi, wake up early, cleanse your body by taking a bath, and wear clean clothes. Cleanse your puja area or a designated sacred space in your home, ensuring it is tidy and free from clutter. Gather all your puja items like an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu, fresh flowers, Tulasi leaves, incense sticks, a lamp (diya) with ghee or oil, cotton wicks, kumkum, chandan, fruits, and sweets for offering.
  2. 2 Place the idol or picture of Lord Vishnu on a clean cloth in your puja area, facing east or north. Light the lamp (diya) with ghee or oil and place it near the deity. Now, sit comfortably on the floor, facing the deity. Hold a little water in your right palm, think of your intention for observing this Ekadashi fast and puja (e.g., for spiritual growth, family well-being, or removal of obstacles), and then pour the water into a small plate on the ground as a 'Sankalp' or vow.
  3. 3 Begin the worship by gently offering a few drops of water to the deity. Then, apply kumkum and chandan (sandalwood paste) on Lord Vishnu's forehead. Offer fresh flowers and especially Tulasi leaves, which are very dear to Lord Vishnu. Light the incense sticks and move them in a clockwise direction before the deity, offering their fragrance. Place the offered fruits and sweets (Prasad) before the idol.
  4. 4 Now, perform a simple Aarti. Light a small camphor piece or a wick soaked in ghee on a plate and move it in a clockwise circular motion before Lord Vishnu, ringing a small bell if you have one. After the Aarti, bow down with reverence. You can then sit silently for a few moments, offering a simple prayer to Lord Vishnu for His blessings, meditating on His form, or recalling His stories. You may say, 'O Lord Vishnu, please bless me and my family.'
  5. 5 Devshayani Ekadashi is primarily observed with a strict fast. Most devotees observe a 'Nirjala' (waterless) fast, or consume only fruits, milk, and specific Ekadashi-friendly foods (like sabudana, kuttu, singhara flour) while avoiding grains, legumes, and common salt. Throughout the day, try to maintain a peaceful mind, engage in spiritual thoughts, and avoid any negative actions or words. Spend the day in prayer and devotion.
  6. 6 In the evening, you may light the lamp and incense again and offer a small prayer to Lord Vishnu before resting. The fast is broken on the next day, Dwadashi (the twelfth lunar day), during a specific period called 'Parana'. Check a reliable Hindu calendar for the precise Parana timing in your region. To break the fast, simply consume a small amount of regular food after the stipulated time, typically starting with a grain like rice, and then you may resume your normal meals.
