Ganesh Chaturthi Puja is the special worship of Lord Ganesha performed on Ganesh Chaturthi, the Hindu festival celebrating Ganesha's birth. Devotees traditionally install a Ganesha idol, perform Shodashopachara Puja, offer flowers, sweets (especially modak), and recite Ganesha mantras. It is performed to seek Lord Ganesha's blessings for wisdom, prosperity, good fortune, and removal of obstacles. The Puja can be performed at home or in a community setting, and the idol may be kept for one or more days depending on family tradition.

How to Perform Ganesh Chaturthi

  1. 1 Before starting the puja, ensure your puja area is clean and tidy. Take a bath and wear fresh, clean clothes. Gather all necessary items like the Ganesha idol, flowers, fruits, sweets (especially modak), lamps, incense sticks, turmeric, kumkum, rice, and a clean cloth for the idol. Arrange them neatly on your puja altar.
  2. 2 Sit comfortably facing the Ganesha idol. Hold a small amount of rice and a few drops of water in your right hand. Close your eyes for a moment and silently state your intention for performing this puja, perhaps for peace, prosperity, or removal of obstacles for your family. Then, offer the rice and water at Lord Ganesha's feet.
  3. 3 Light the traditional oil lamp (diya) and incense sticks. As you light them, silently pray for wisdom to guide your family and for auspiciousness to fill your home. Let the gentle light and fragrance create a peaceful and sacred atmosphere for the puja.
  4. 4 Gently place the Ganesha idol on a clean, raised platform or altar. You can place a small mound of rice or a betel nut as a base for the idol if you wish. Ensure the idol is stable and prominently positioned, ready for worship.
  5. 5 Offer a fresh flower to the Ganesha idol, placing it gently at his feet. With folded hands, silently invite Lord Ganesha to be present in your home and accept your heartfelt worship. Express your devotion and welcome his divine presence.
  6. 6 Gently sprinkle a few drops of clean water onto the idol using a fresh leaf or flower, symbolizing a ritual bath. Alternatively, you may use a clean, damp cloth to wipe the idol gently. This purifies the idol and prepares it for further offerings.
  7. 7 Offer a new piece of cloth, preferably red or yellow, to adorn Lord Ganesha. If a cloth is not available, you can offer a sacred thread (janeu or moli) or a small piece of cotton, symbolizing new attire. Place it respectfully near the idol.
  8. 8 Apply a tilak of kumkum (red powder) and chandan (sandalwood paste) on Lord Ganesha's forehead. Offer fresh flowers, especially red hibiscus and durva grass (if available), placing them gently at his feet. Finally, offer some unbroken rice grains (akshat).
  9. 9 Offer sweets, especially modak or laddoo, fruits, and any other pure food items you have prepared, placing them on a clean plate in front of the idol. After offering, you can also place a spoonful of water, symbolizing a drink for the deity.
  10. 10 If available, offer a betel leaf (paan) with a supari (betel nut), a clove, and a cardamom pod placed on it. This is a traditional offering representing respect and auspiciousness. Place it gently near the other offerings.
  11. 11 Light the camphor or the cotton wick in your aarti plate. Hold the plate in both hands and gently wave it clockwise in front of Lord Ganesha, while singing or playing a Ganesha aarti. After the aarti, offer the flame to your family members to touch with their hands and then touch their eyes or head.
  12. 12 If space permits, stand up and perform three clockwise circumambulations (Pradakshina) around the Ganesha idol. If space is limited, simply turn around three times in your place, offering your reverence and respect.
  13. 13 Fold your hands respectfully and silently offer a prayer for forgiveness for any mistakes, knowing or unknowingly, made during the puja. Express your sincere gratitude to Lord Ganesha for his presence and blessings.
  14. 14 Finally, distribute the offered sweets, fruits, and other pure food items (prasad) among all family members and any guests present. Partaking in prasad is considered a blessing and signifies the successful completion of the puja.
