Guruvar Vrat
Complete, verified samagri list containing 17 essential items for performing Guruvar Vrat.
Guruvar Vrat, or Thursday Fast, is a revered Hindu observance dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Brihaspati Dev (the deity of Jupiter). Devotees typically observe this fast from sunrise to sunset, often consuming only milk, fruits, or specific vrat-friendly foods once. It is primarily undertaken to seek blessings for wealth, prosperity, knowledge, wisdom, marital happiness, and the well-being of children. Many believe that observing Guruvar Vrat can alleviate the malefic effects of Jupiter in one's horoscope and bring good fortune.

How to Perform Guruvar Vrat
- 1 Clean the puja area thoroughly. Take a purifying bath, wear clean, preferably yellow, clothes. Gather all puja items like a picture or idol of Lord Vishnu or Brihaspati Dev, yellow cloth, turmeric, chana dal (split chickpeas), jaggery, yellow flowers, a ghee lamp, incense sticks, a small pot (kalash) with water, rice, kumkum, and fruits (especially banana).
- 2 Sit comfortably on a mat or cushion, facing east or north, in front of your puja setup. Hold a little water, rice, and a flower in your right hand. Close your eyes for a moment, and silently declare your intention to observe the Guruvar Vrat for the well-being and blessings of your family.
- 3 Place the idol or picture of Lord Vishnu or Brihaspati Dev on a clean platform covered with the yellow cloth. Arrange the kalash filled with water and rice near the deity. Place the turmeric, chana dal, jaggery, fruits, and flowers around the setup.
- 4 Light the ghee lamp (diya) and the incense sticks (agarbatti). Offer them to the deity by circling them gently in front of the idol or picture. Silently pray for peace and prosperity for your home.
- 5 Apply a tilak (mark) of sandalwood paste or kumkum to the forehead of the deity (or on the picture). Offer the yellow flowers, chana dal, jaggery, and fruits (especially banana) to the deity. Sprinkle a few drops of water from the kalash as a symbolic offering.
- 6 Read or listen to the Guruvar Vrat Katha (story) with devotion. This story narrates the significance and benefits of observing the fast. After listening, gently sprinkle a few drops of water on the storybook or text if you are reading from one.
- 7 Perform Aarti using the lighted lamp, circling it clockwise in front of the deity while ringing a small bell or clapping your hands. Sing a simple Aarti hymn for Lord Vishnu or Brihaspati Dev. Conclude by bowing down and humbly asking for blessings for health, wealth, knowledge, and family well-being.
- 8 After the puja, offer a portion of the consecrated chana dal, jaggery, and fruits to family members as Prasad. Share it with others if possible. Consume a small amount yourself to complete the ritual.
