How to Perform Skanda Sashti Vrat
- 1 Begin by thoroughly cleaning your home and taking a purifying bath. Gather all necessary puja items: an image or idol of Lord Murugan, lamps, oil, wicks, incense, camphor, flowers, fruits, sweets, kumkum, turmeric, holy ash (Vibhuti), a bell, a puja thali, and fresh water. Arrange these neatly on your puja altar, ideally facing the East direction.
- 2 After lighting the lamp and incense sticks, sit comfortably in front of the altar. Join your palms in a prayerful gesture and silently declare your intention (Sankalpam) for observing the Skanda Sashti Vrat for six days, praying for courage, strength, good health, and the wellbeing of your family.
- 3 Begin your worship by offering a simple prayer to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Place a small amount of turmeric paste or a betel nut as a symbolic Ganesha, offer a flower, and silently pray for the successful and uninterrupted completion of your vrat.
- 4 Now, focus your devotion entirely on Lord Murugan. Offer fresh flowers to his image or idol, light camphor, and gently ring the bell. Silently invoke his divine presence and express your heartfelt devotion, asking for his continuous blessings throughout the six days of the vrat.
- 5 During the entire six-day period, strictly adhere to your chosen fasting discipline, which could involve consuming only one meal a day or observing a complete fast. Each morning, perform a simple daily puja for Lord Murugan by lighting the lamp, incense, and offering fresh water and a flower. You may also chant a simple prayer like 'Om Saravanabhava Namaha' silently or audibly.
- 6 On the sixth and final day, which is known as Skanda Sashti, perform a more elaborate puja. Offer special sweets, fruits, and additional varieties of flowers to Lord Murugan. Light camphor and incense, and if possible, read aloud or listen to the inspiring stories of Lord Murugan's victory over the demon Surapadman from the Skanda Purana to deepen your devotion.
- 7 After successfully completing the final puja on Skanda Sashti, break your fast by partaking in the sacred Prasad (offerings made to the deity). Share this blessed Prasad with your family members and any guests present, concluding your vrat with a heart full of gratitude and the profound blessings of Lord Murugan.
