How to Perform Akshaya Tritiya Puja

  1. 1 Begin by cleaning your puja area thoroughly and taking a purifying bath. Gather all necessary items: idols or pictures of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Vishnu, a clean cloth for the altar, fresh water, kumkum, haldi, unbroken rice grains (akshat), fresh flowers, incense sticks, a ghee lamp (diya) with cotton wicks, and any sweets or fruits for offering (prasad). Ensure everything is easily accessible.
  2. 2 Sit comfortably facing East or North on a clean mat or asana. Hold a small amount of unbroken rice grains and a few drops of water in your right palm. Silently state your intention for performing this puja, perhaps for your family's prosperity, health, and well-being, or any specific positive outcome you seek. After stating your intention, gently offer the rice and water onto a plate placed in front of you.
  3. 3 First, worship Lord Ganesha to remove all obstacles. Place an idol or picture of Lord Ganesha on your altar. Offer a fresh flower, a pinch of kumkum, and a few grains of rice to Him. Light the ghee lamp and an incense stick, and with folded hands, pray to Lord Ganesha for His blessings and for the successful completion of your puja without any hindrances.
  4. 4 Place a small, clean pot (kalash), preferably made of copper or brass, filled with fresh water on your altar. Place five mango leaves or betel leaves around its mouth, and a coconut on top. Drop a coin, a pinch of rice, and a small supari (betel nut) into the water within the kalash. This kalash symbolizes the presence of all divine energies and holy waters, inviting their blessings into your home.
  5. 5 Now, worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu. Place their idols or pictures on the altar next to the kalash. Offer fresh flowers, kumkum, haldi, and unbroken rice grains to them. Symbolically offer a few drops of water for their sacred bath, and then offer new clothes by placing a small piece of clean cloth or a sacred thread near their images. Light incense and the ghee lamp again, meditating on their divine forms and praying for wealth, prosperity, and spiritual well-being for your family.
  6. 6 Offer the prepared sweets, fruits, or any other food item you have arranged as 'prasad' to the deities. Place them on a clean plate in front of the idols and offer a small glass of water alongside. Silently express your devotion and pray that the deities graciously accept your humble offerings, sanctifying them with their divine presence.
  7. 7 Light a camphor or the ghee lamp for Aarti. Hold the lamp in your right hand and gently circulate it in a clockwise direction in front of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Vishnu. All family members can join in singing a simple devotional Aarti song or silently observe with reverence. After the Aarti, pass your hands over the warm flame and then touch them to your eyes and head, receiving the divine energy.
  8. 8 Bow down before the deities with folded hands, touching the ground as a gesture of profound respect, gratitude, and complete surrender. This is a moment to humbly seek their final blessings. Afterwards, lovingly distribute the offered 'prasad' to all family members and any guests present. Partake in the prasad yourself, as it is considered sanctified and a source of divine grace.
  9. 9 Fold your hands and offer a final, heartfelt prayer, expressing your deepest gratitude to the deities for their presence and blessings. Humbly ask for forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes made during the puja. Additionally, as Akshaya Tritiya emphasizes unending prosperity, consider setting aside some money, grains, or clothes for donation to the needy. This act of selfless giving is believed to multiply your blessings.
