How to Perform Durga Ashtami
- 1 Clean the puja area thoroughly and set up an idol or picture of Goddess Durga. Arrange all puja items such as a lamp, incense sticks, flowers, kumkum, rice, water, sweets, and fruits neatly on a plate or tray near the Goddess. Place a small red cloth or a fresh leaf as a base for the offerings.
- 2 Sit comfortably facing the idol, preferably towards the East or North. Light the ghee lamp and incense sticks, letting their fragrance fill the space. Hold a little water, a pinch of rice, and a flower in your right palm, silently express your intention for performing the puja, and then gently release them into a plate below.
- 3 Before worshipping Goddess Durga, first offer respect to Lord Ganesha to seek his blessings for a smooth puja. Offer a flower, a small amount of rice (akshat), and a drop of water near the Ganesha idol or picture, or simply mentally invoke him. Silently pray for the removal of all obstacles from your path.
- 4 Offer fresh flowers to the idol or picture of Maa Durga, respectfully inviting her divine presence into your home. Then, offer a pinch of kumkum, haldi, and a few grains of rice (akshat) to the Goddess. Follow this by offering clean water, fruits, and sweets (prasad) as expressions of your devotion.
- 5 Light camphor or a small ghee lamp for Aarti and ring the puja bell gently. Perform Aarti by moving the flame in a clockwise circular motion in front of the Goddess's idol or picture, singing or silently chanting her praise. After Aarti, pass your hands over the flame and gently touch them to your eyes, absorbing the divine energy.
- 6 Invite 2 to 9 young unmarried girls (ideally pre-pubescent) into your home. Wash their feet respectfully, offer them a meal of puri, halwa, and chana, and give them small gifts or a little money (dakshina). Touch their feet to seek their blessings, recognizing them as manifestations of the Goddess herself.
- 7 If performing Havan, light a small fire in a secure container, using a few small pieces of wood or cow dung cakes and camphor. Offer small amounts of ghee and a pinch of rice or sesame seeds into the sacred fire while silently expressing your prayers for peace, prosperity, and protection. Ensure the fire is safely managed and extinguished afterward.
- 8 Distribute the sweets, fruits, and other food items offered to the Goddess as "Prasad" among all family members, friends, and neighbors. Conclude the puja by offering a final prayer, thanking Maa Durga for her blessings, and seeking forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes made during the ritual.
