How to Perform Annakut Puja

  1. 1 Begin by thoroughly cleaning the puja area and yourself. Gather all the ingredients for the Annakut (56 dishes) and arrange them neatly. Ensure you have fresh flowers, incense, a lamp (diya), ghee, water, and an idol or picture of Lord Krishna and Govardhan Hill.
  2. 2 Place the idol or picture of Lord Krishna and Govardhan Hill on a clean altar or raised platform. Arrange the fresh flowers around the deity. Sit comfortably facing the deity, perhaps on a mat or cushion, with a calm mind.
  3. 3 Light the ghee lamp (diya) and place it on the altar. Then, light the incense sticks (agarbatti) and place them in a stand. Silently offer a prayer for the well-being and prosperity of your family, invoking divine blessings to commence the puja.
  4. 4 Take a spoon of clean water in your right palm and offer it three times to the deity, thinking of purification. You can mentally say, 'Om Achyutaya Namah, Om Anantaya Namah, Om Govindaya Namah' while doing so, or simply offer with reverence.
  5. 5 Using your right ring finger, apply a tilak (sandalwood paste or kumkum) on the forehead of the deity. You may also apply a small tilak to your own forehead as a sign of respect and devotion.
  6. 6 Take some fresh flowers in your hands and offer them to the feet of Lord Krishna and Govardhan Hill. You can also gently place some flowers around the altar, expressing your love and devotion.
  7. 7 Carefully arrange all the prepared Annakut dishes (Chappan Bhog) in front of the deity. Place the mound of food as a symbol of Govardhan Hill. Offer these various food items to Lord Krishna with a heart full of gratitude for abundance and sustenance.
  8. 8 Light a small camphor piece or a small lamp with ghee in a tray. Hold it in your right hand and wave it clockwise in front of the deity in circular motions, singing or playing an aarti song. Focus on the divine light and energy.
  9. 9 Stand up and gently walk around the altar clockwise three times, if space permits. If not, you may simply turn around in your place three times. This act symbolizes acknowledging the deity as the center of your universe.
  10. 10 Bow down with folded hands, touching your forehead to the ground if possible, or simply pressing your palms together in Namaste. Offer a final prayer for forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes and seek blessings for your family's well-being and prosperity.
  11. 11 After the puja, consider the Annakut offering as sacred Prasad. Distribute it among all family members, friends, and anyone present. Consuming this blessed food is believed to bring good health and prosperity. Share with a joyful and grateful heart.
