How to Perform Santoshi Maa / Shukravar Vrat
- 1 Begin by thoroughly cleaning the area where you plan to perform the puja. Lay a clean cloth or mat on the ground. Gather all necessary puja items: an idol or picture of Santoshi Maa, a lamp (diya), ghee or oil, cotton wicks, incense sticks (agarbatti), fresh flowers, kumkum (red vermilion), a small amount of unbroken rice (akshat), a plate for offerings, jaggery (gud), roasted chickpeas (chana), and a glass of water. Ensure no sour foods are in the puja area or consumed by anyone in the household during the fast.
- 2 Sit comfortably on a clean mat or cushion, facing East. Hold a little water in your right palm, along with a few grains of rice and a flower. Close your eyes and silently declare your intention (sankalp) to observe the Santoshi Maa Vrat for your desires, such as family well-being, happiness, or specific wishes. Then, let the water flow into a plate or bowl, symbolizing your commitment.
- 3 As is customary in Hindu pujas, first offer a brief prayer to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. If you have a small idol or picture of Lord Ganesha, place it near Santoshi Maa's. Offer a pinch of kumkum and a flower to Him, silently asking for a smooth and successful completion of your vrat.
- 4 Place the idol or picture of Santoshi Maa on the clean cloth or mat you prepared. Adorn her with any available decorations, such as a small garland of flowers. Ensure the deity is respectfully positioned and the surrounding area is tidy and inviting for the puja.
- 5 Light the lamp (diya) with ghee or oil and place it reverently in front of Santoshi Maa's idol/picture. Then, light an incense stick (agarbatti) and gently wave it clockwise in front of the deity a few times. As you do this, silently offer a simple prayer to Santoshi Maa, seeking her blessings for your family's happiness and prosperity.
- 6 Offer fresh flowers to Santoshi Maa. Then, take a pinch of kumkum and a few grains of unbroken rice (akshat) and gently place them at her feet or apply them to her forehead. If you have sandalwood paste (chandan), you may also apply a small dot to her forehead.
- 7 Place the offering of jaggery (gud) and roasted chickpeas (chana) in a clean plate in front of the deity. These two items are considered very dear to Santoshi Maa and are essential for her puja. Remember, absolutely no sour elements should be mixed with this offering.
- 8 Sit comfortably and with devotion, either read aloud or listen to the Santoshi Maa Vrat Katha (story). It is believed that listening to this sacred story with a pure heart is a vital part of the vrat and brings immense blessings. After the story concludes, affirm your faith by saying 'Santoshi Maa ki Jai' (Victory to Santoshi Maa).
- 9 Following the Katha, perform Aarti. Hold the lit lamp (diya) and move it clockwise in a circular motion in front of Santoshi Maa's idol/picture, expressing your devotion. If you know the Santoshi Maa Aarti song, you may sing it; otherwise, simply chant her name. After the Aarti, pass your hands over the flame and gently touch your eyes and head to receive its purifying blessings.
- 10 Distribute the offered jaggery and roasted chickpeas (gud-chana) as prasad to all family members and any other individuals present. Also, share the flowers and other sacred offerings as blessings. Reiterate the importance of everyone in the household abstaining from consuming any sour foods or drinks on this day.
- 11 You can break your fast (paran) after sunset on Friday, typically after completing the puja and consuming the prasad. The most crucial rule for breaking this fast is to strictly avoid any sour foods or drinks. You should consume a simple, pure (sattvic) meal, free from any sour ingredients.
- 12 Finally, offer a short, heartfelt prayer to Santoshi Maa, expressing your gratitude for her blessings and seeking forgiveness for any unintentional errors or omissions during the puja. Thank her for accepting your devotion and pray for the fulfillment of your desires.
