How to Perform Ram Navami Puja (Home)
- 1 Before starting the puja, gather all necessary items like an idol or picture of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman, fresh flowers, fruits, sweets (prasad), a diya (lamp) with oil/ghee and wicks, incense sticks, a small bell, kalash (pot) with water, haldi (turmeric), kumkum (vermilion), chandan (sandalwood paste), unbroken rice (akshat), and a clean cloth for the altar. Clean the puja area thoroughly and arrange all items neatly on a clean altar or elevated surface.
- 2 Sit comfortably facing east or north, with folded legs. Hold a spoonful of water, a few rice grains, and a flower in your right palm. Close your eyes and silently state your intention for performing this puja, such as seeking blessings for family well-being, peace, or prosperity. Then, gently pour the contents from your hand into a small plate or kalash.
- 3 Light the diya (lamp) with ghee or oil. Place it on the altar, slightly to the right of the deities. As you light it, silently pray for the removal of darkness and the illumination of knowledge and auspiciousness in your home and life.
- 4 Before worshiping Lord Rama, it's customary to first offer prayers to Lord Ganesha for the smooth completion of the puja without obstacles. Offer a pinch of haldi, kumkum, and a few rice grains to a small Ganesha idol or picture (if present) or simply visualize Lord Ganesha. Ring the bell gently while offering.
- 5 Now, with folded hands, invite Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman to be present in your puja. You can simply say, "Hey Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman, please accept my humble prayers and bless our home." Offer a flower to the idol or picture, signifying their presence.
- 6 If you have a small idol, you can symbolically bathe it with Panchamrit (a mixture of milk, curd, honey, sugar, and ghee). If you only have a picture or larger idol, simply sprinkle a few drops of plain water or Panchamrit (if prepared) onto the deities using a flower or spoon, imagining you are bathing them. After this, wipe the idol gently with a clean cloth.
- 7 Offer new clothes to the deities. If you don't have miniature clothes, you can offer a fresh piece of cloth, such as a small strip of silk or cotton, or simply offer a flower with the intention of offering clothing.
- 8 Apply tilak (a dot) of chandan (sandalwood paste) or kumkum to the foreheads of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman on their idol or picture. You can use your right ring finger for this.
- 9 Offer fresh flowers, especially red or yellow ones, to the deities. Place them at their feet or around their image. You can also offer a garland if available. As you offer each flower, you can silently express your devotion.
- 10 Light the incense sticks (agarbatti) and wave them gently in a clockwise circular motion in front of the deities, allowing the fragrant smoke to purify the atmosphere. Then, pick up the lit diya again and show its light to the deities in the same circular motion.
- 11 Offer fruits, sweets, or any other prepared pure vegetarian food items (prasad) to the deities. Place them on a clean plate in front of the idol/picture. You can sprinkle a few drops of water over the offering, signifying its purification, and silently request the deities to accept the food.
- 12 Lord Rama is an incarnation of Vishnu, and Tulsi leaves are especially dear to Lord Vishnu. Offer a few clean Tulsi leaves to the deities, placing them on the prasad or at their feet.
- 13 This is a central part of Ram Navami. Spend some time reading a chapter from the Ramayana, especially focusing on the birth of Lord Rama, or sing devotional bhajans (hymns) dedicated to Lord Rama. This creates a sacred and devotional atmosphere.
- 14 Light a small camphor piece or a diya with multiple wicks in an Aarti plate. Ring the bell continuously with one hand while moving the Aarti plate in a clockwise circular motion in front of the deities with the other hand. Sing the Ram Aarti or any other devotional Aarti. After performing Aarti, gently wave your hands over the flame and then touch your eyes and head, symbolizing receiving the divine blessings.
- 15 After Aarti, fold your hands, close your eyes, and bow down to the deities, expressing your heartfelt gratitude, devotion, and asking for their continued blessings. You can prostrate fully if comfortable.
- 16 Distribute the offered sweets, fruits, and other food items (prasad) among all family members and friends present. Prasad is considered sacred and blessed, symbolizing the shared blessings of the puja.
