Kajari Teej Puja is a significant Hindu festival primarily observed by married women, particularly in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar. It is celebrated a few days after Hariyali Teej. On this day, women observe a strict nirjala (waterless) fast and pray to Goddess Teej (Parvati) for the long life, well-being, and prosperity of their husbands. It is believed that performing this puja and fast brings marital happiness and strengthens the bond between husband and wife.

How to Perform Kajari Teej Puja

  1. 1 Before starting the puja, take a purifying bath and wear clean clothes. Prepare the puja area by cleaning it thoroughly. Then, sit facing east or north, close your eyes for a moment, and silently resolve to observe the fast and perform the puja for your husband's long life and well-being.
  2. 2 On a clean wooden stool or platform, spread a red or yellow cloth. Place idols or pictures of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha on it. Arrange all your puja items like lamp, incense sticks, flowers, fruits, kumkum, haldi, sindoor, and sweets neatly around them.
  3. 3 Light a ghee lamp (diya) and place it on the altar. Light a few incense sticks (agarbatti) and place them in an incense holder. Offer a silent prayer to invoke the divine presence and create a sacred atmosphere for the puja.
  4. 4 Always begin any puja by worshipping Lord Ganesha. Offer a small amount of water, a flower, a little kumkum, and a piece of sweet (modak if available) to Lord Ganesha. Silently pray to him to remove any obstacles from your puja and life.
  5. 5 Now, turn your attention to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. Offer water, flowers, kumkum, haldi, and sindoor to Goddess Parvati. Offer water, bilva leaves (if available), and flowers to Lord Shiva. Place fruits and sweets before them.
  6. 6 For Kajari Teej, it is traditional to offer 'saptadhanya' (seven different grains) or a special 'bhog' made from sattu, jaggery, and ghee. Place this offering before the deities, showing your devotion and gratitude.
  7. 7 After making all the offerings, sit comfortably and read or listen to the Kajari Teej Katha (story). The Katha narrates the significance and legends associated with the festival, which helps in understanding its spiritual meaning.
  8. 8 Once the Katha is complete, perform Aarti. Hold the lit lamp in your right hand and wave it clockwise in front of the deities while singing an Aarti song or simply with devotion. Conclude by taking the blessings by passing your hands over the flame and touching your eyes and head.
  9. 9 In the evening, after the moon rises, go outside or to a window from where you can see the moon. Offer water to the moon (arghya) by holding water in a small pot and slowly pouring it out while looking at the moon, praying for your husband's long life and happiness.
  10. 10 After offering water to the moon, you can break your Nirjala (waterless) fast. First, drink some water, then consume the Prasad (offerings) that you made to the deities. This concludes your Kajari Teej fast and puja.
