How to Perform Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat

  1. 1 Wake up before sunrise, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. Clean the puja area and set up a small altar (चौकी) with a red cloth. Place an idol or picture of Lord Ganesha on it.
  2. 2 Arrange all puja items: fresh flowers (especially red ones), Durva grass (three-leaf blades, if available), a lamp (दीपक) with ghee or oil, incense sticks (अगरबत्ती), a small pot of clean water, Roli (red powder) and Akshat (rice grains), sweets like Modak or Laddoo, and seasonal fruits.
  3. 3 Sit comfortably facing North or East, light the lamp and incense sticks. Offer Roli, Akshat, a few flowers, and Durva grass to Lord Ganesha, silently seeking His blessings for the successful observance of the fast and the removal of obstacles.
  4. 4 After the initial offerings, take a small sip of water from the pot (आचमन) and make a silent resolve (संकल्प) to observe the Sankashti Chaturthi fast with full devotion from sunrise until moonrise. From this point, you will abstain from food and water until the moon is sighted and the main puja is complete.
  5. 5 In the evening, before the moon rises, clean yourself again by washing your hands and face, or taking a quick bath if desired. Prepare the puja area for the main evening ritual. Ensure all offerings like fresh Modaks or sweets, fruits, and the water for the Moon (अर्घ्य) are ready.
  6. 6 Once the moon is sighted in the sky, sit before Lord Ganesha's idol/picture. Light the lamp and incense again. Offer all prepared items: flowers, Durva grass, Roli, Akshat, Modaks/Laddoos, and fruits to Lord Ganesha. You may silently recite a simple prayer or Ganesha mantra if you know one.
  7. 7 Stand facing the moon. Take the pot of clean water, add a few grains of rice and a flower petal to it. Hold the pot with both hands and slowly pour the water towards the moon (अर्घ्य), while silently praying to Chandra Dev (Moon God) for peace, prosperity, and blessings.
  8. 8 After offering Arghya to the Moon, return to the puja area. Distribute the Prasad (Modaks, fruits, etc.) offered to Lord Ganesha among family members. Break your fast by consuming this Prasad. Afterward, you may have a simple, light meal, traditionally without grains.
