Vaikuntha Ekadashi is a highly auspicious Hindu observance dedicated to Lord Vishnu, primarily celebrated by followers of Vaishnavism. It falls on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon phase) in the month of Margashirsha or Pausha in the Hindu calendar. Devotees observe a strict fast, engage in prayers, and visit Vishnu temples, particularly those that open the 'Vaikuntha Dwaram' (Gate to Vaikuntha) on this day. It is believed that observing Vaikuntha Ekadashi with devotion cleanses one of sins, grants spiritual liberation, and opens the path to Vaikuntha, Lord Vishnu's celestial abode.

How to Perform Vaikuntha Ekadashi

  1. 1 On the day before Ekadashi (Dashami), eat only once, avoiding rice and heavy foods. Wake up early on Ekadashi, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. Purify your body and mind for the upcoming fast and devotion.
  2. 2 Sit comfortably facing East or North in your puja area. Hold a small amount of water in your right palm, along with a flower or a few grains of rice. Silently declare your intention to observe the Vaikuntha Ekadashi fast and puja for Lord Vishnu's blessings and your family's well-being, then release the water into a plate.
  3. 3 Place an image or idol of Lord Vishnu (or Krishna) on a clean altar or elevated surface. Light a ghee or oil lamp (diya) and some incense sticks (agarbatti) in front of the deity, placing them to the right and left respectively. This symbolizes inviting divine presence and dispelling darkness.
  4. 4 Offer a spoonful of clean water to the deity, signifying purification. Apply a tilak (sandalwood paste or kumkum) on the forehead of the idol/picture. Then, offer fresh flowers, especially Tulasi leaves if available, by gently placing them at the feet of Lord Vishnu, expressing your devotion.
  5. 5 Light a new incense stick and show its smoke in circular motions before the deity (dhoop). Then, wave the lit lamp gently in front of the deity (deep). Offer a simple, sattvic food item like fruits, milk, or sweets (without onion, garlic, or grains for Ekadashi), placing it before the deity as Naivedyam.
  6. 6 Sit quietly and chant "Om Namo Narayanaya" or "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" a few times, or simply pray to Lord Vishnu for blessings, peace, and spiritual growth. You can also read from a holy book like the Bhagavad Gita or Vishnu Sahasranamam, if desired.
  7. 7 Conclude the puja by performing Aarti. Light a camphor or a small wick in a multi-wick lamp, and gently wave it clockwise in front of the deity while singing a simple bhajan or just silently meditating on Lord Vishnu. After Aarti, bow down (pranam) to the deity, seeking forgiveness for any errors and expressing gratitude.
  8. 8 On the next day, Dwadashi, after sunrise and within the specific Parana period (which can be found in a local panchang or Hindu calendar), break your fast. Take a small amount of the offered Naivedyam (prasad) and have some water. Avoid breaking the fast during Harivasara (the first quarter of Dwadashi).
