How to Perform Hartalika Teej Puja
- 1 Choose a clean spot in your home for the puja. Clean the area thoroughly and spread a clean cloth or mat. Place a small wooden stool (chowki) or a raised platform on it. This will be your sacred space for the deities.
- 2 Before starting, gather all necessary puja items: idols or pictures of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha; fresh flowers, belpatra leaves, durva grass, sindoor, haldi, kumkum, chandan, agarbatti (incense sticks), diya (lamp) with oil/ghee and cotton wick, fruits, sweets (naivedya), coconut, betel leaves and nuts, kalawa (sacred thread), a new red saree or chunari for Goddess Parvati, and a vessel of water.
- 3 Sit comfortably facing east. Hold a small amount of rice, flowers, and a few drops of water in your right hand. Close your eyes and silently take a vow (sankalp) for the Hartalika Teej fast and puja, expressing your desire for your husband's long life and well-being (for married women) or a suitable life partner (for unmarried girls). Then, offer these items at the feet of the deities.
- 4 Place the idols or pictures of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha on the prepared chowki. First place Ganesha, then Shiva, and finally Parvati. Decorate them with fresh flowers, garlands, and the red chunari/saree for Goddess Parvati. You can make small clay idols of the deities if traditionally done in your family and place them here.
- 5 Light the diya and agarbatti. With folded hands, meditate on Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha, inviting them to accept your worship. Offer a few drops of clean water to each deity by gently sprinkling it with a flower or spoon as a symbolic bath (snan).
- 6 Offer belpatra leaves to Lord Shiva and durva grass to Lord Ganesha. Then, apply tilak (a dot) of chandan, kumkum, and sindoor to all deities. For Goddess Parvati, also apply sindoor on her forehead as a sign of marital bliss. Tie kalawa (sacred thread) around their wrists.
- 7 Offer various fruits, especially seasonal ones, to the deities. Place sweets (naivedya) like modak, laddoo, or other traditional preparations in front of them. You can also offer a coconut and betel leaves with a betel nut (paan-supari) as an offering.
- 8 Light another diya if needed. Now, read or listen to the Hartalika Teej Katha (story). The story narrates Goddess Parvati's devotion and penance to marry Lord Shiva. This is a very important part of the puja, reminding you of the significance of the fast and devotion.
- 9 After the katha, perform Aarti using the lit diya (lamp). Move the lamp clockwise in front of the deities, ringing a small bell if you have one. Sing or play the Aarti song dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Conclude by offering the light to everyone present by gently passing your hands over the flame and then touching your eyes.
- 10 With folded hands, offer your final prayers to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha. Express your gratitude for their blessings and humbly ask for forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes made during the puja. Bow down and seek their continued blessings for your family's well-being and marital happiness.
