Ekadashi is a significant holy day observed twice a month in the Hindu calendar, specifically on the eleventh day of both the waxing (Shukla Paksha) and waning (Krishna Paksha) phases of the moon. This sacred observance is primarily dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is marked by devotees undertaking a fast, engaging in prayers, and dedicating the day to spiritual activities. It is believed that observing Ekadashi Vrat purifies the mind and body, absolves sins, and bestows spiritual merit, peace, and prosperity upon the devotee. Many consider it a powerful means to deepen their connection with the divine and seek blessings for a virtuous life.

How to Perform Ekadashi

  1. 1 On the day before Ekadashi, known as Dashami, purify your home by cleaning it thoroughly. Ensure your puja area, especially where you will worship Lord Vishnu, is clean and tidy. Mentally prepare yourself for the fast and spiritual observance ahead.
  2. 2 On Ekadashi morning, wake up early and take a purifying bath. Wear clean clothes. Sit facing east on a clean mat in your puja area. Hold a little water in your right palm and take a silent vow (sankalpa) to observe the fast with devotion, seeking Lord Vishnu's blessings for your family's well-being.
  3. 3 Arrange an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu (or Krishna/Rama) on a clean altar. Place a lamp (diya) with oil or ghee and a cotton wick, incense sticks, flowers, tulsi leaves, fruits, and a small vessel of water near the idol. Keep a small bell handy if you have one.
  4. 4 Light the lamp (diya) and the incense sticks. Offer them to Lord Vishnu by circling them gently clockwise in front of the deity, while silently praying for peace and prosperity. The light symbolizes knowledge, and the incense symbolizes purity of intention.
  5. 5 Offer flowers, especially tulsi leaves (which are very dear to Lord Vishnu), by placing them at the deity's feet. Apply a small dot of sandalwood paste (chandan) and kumkum on the deity's forehead. Offer the fruits you prepared as 'bhog' (sacred food offering). Ring the bell gently a few times during the offerings.
  6. 6 After offerings, sit quietly for some time. You can chant "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" or simply meditate on Lord Vishnu's form. Read any holy texts like the Bhagavad Gita or Vishnu Sahasranama if you wish. Dedicate this time to spiritual reflection and connecting with the divine.
  7. 7 Throughout the day, observe the fast according to your capacity. Many devotees observe a complete fast (nirjala vrat) without food or water, while others consume fruits, milk, or specific Ekadashi-friendly foods (phalहार). Avoid grains, rice, beans, and certain spices. Maintain a positive and calm mindset.
  8. 8 In the evening, perform a simple aarti (lamp ceremony) to Lord Vishnu again, or offer another round of prayers. Some devotees also observe a 'jagran' (all-night vigil) where they stay awake, chanting hymns and meditating. However, a simple evening prayer is sufficient for most families.
  9. 9 The fast is broken on the morning of Dwadashi (the twelfth day) within a specific time frame, which can be found in a Hindu calendar (panchang). Consume a small amount of an Ekadashi-friendly food item (like a tulsi leaf, fruit, or a single grain of rice if allowed in your tradition, after offering it to Vishnu) to formally break the fast.
  10. 10 After breaking the fast, you may offer some food or charity to those in need, if possible. Express gratitude to Lord Vishnu for enabling you to complete the observance successfully. This concludes your Ekadashi Vrat, bringing spiritual merit and blessings.
