Pradosh Vrat is a significant Hindu fast observed bi-monthly on the Trayodashi (13th) day of both the waxing and waning moon phases. Dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, devotees undertake this fast to seek their blessings for happiness, prosperity, good health, and fulfillment of desires. It is believed that observing Pradosh Vrat helps absolve sins and brings spiritual merit. The fast is typically observed from sunrise until sunset, broken after performing a special puja during the 'Pradosh Kaal,' the auspicious twilight period.

How to Perform Pradosh Vrat
- 1 On the day of Pradosh Vrat, wake up early, take a purifying bath, and wear clean clothes. Clean your puja area and home. Mentally make a resolve to observe the fast with sincerity, dedicating it to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for blessings.
- 2 Observe the fast throughout the day. You can choose to keep a nirjala (without water) fast, or consume water, fruits, and milk, depending on your health and capacity. Maintain a peaceful and positive mindset, chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" silently if you wish.
- 3 Before sunset, during the auspicious 'Pradosh Kaal' (twilight period, roughly 45 minutes before to 45 minutes after sunset), take another bath and wear fresh, clean clothes. Prepare your puja altar by placing an idol or picture of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Gather all puja items: a ghee lamp (diya), incense sticks (agarbatti), fresh flowers, bilva leaves (bel patra), dhatura fruit (if available), milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, sugar (for panchamrit), clean water, sandalwood paste, kumkum, unbroken rice (akshat), and any sweet or fruit offerings.
- 4 Sit facing east or north, comfortably on a clean mat or cloth. Light the ghee lamp and incense sticks. Offer a simple prayer to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, expressing your devotion and asking for their blessings for your family's well-being, happiness, and prosperity.
- 5 Take a small amount of clean water in a spoon and gently offer it to the deity, thinking of purifying them. Then, in a small bowl, mix milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, and sugar to prepare Panchamrit. Slowly pour the Panchamrit over the idol or picture, followed by another offering of clean water to cleanse the deity again.
- 6 Apply a small dot of sandalwood paste and kumkum to the deity. Offer bilva leaves, fresh flowers, and dhatura fruit (if using) to Lord Shiva. Sprinkle some unbroken rice (akshat) while silently praying.
- 7 Place the sweet or fruit offerings (Naivedyam) before the deity. Light a camphor or cotton wick dipped in ghee on a small plate and perform Aarti, rotating it clockwise in front of the deity while singing or reciting a simple prayer. After Aarti, offer a final prayer, bow down, and seek forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes.
- 8 Distribute the offered Prasad among family members. After the puja concludes, you can break your fast by consuming this Prasad, followed by a light, sattvic (pure and simple) meal. Avoid heavy, non-vegetarian, or spicy food.
