How to Perform Somvar Vrat
- 1 Wake up early on Monday morning, ideally before sunrise. After bathing, wear clean clothes. Prepare your puja area by cleaning it and laying a fresh cloth, ensuring it is a peaceful and clean space for worship.
- 2 Gather all necessary puja items: a small Shiva Lingam or Lord Shiva's idol, fresh water in a kalash (pot), raw milk, bilva leaves (bel patra), fresh flowers (especially white ones), incense sticks (agarbatti), a lamp (diya) with ghee or oil, cotton wicks, sandalwood paste (chandan), vermillion (roli), a small plate for offerings, and some fruit or sweets as prasad.
- 3 Sit comfortably facing east or north, with the Shiva Lingam/idol placed before you. Light the ghee/oil lamp and the incense sticks. Offer a silent prayer to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, expressing your intention to observe the fast for their blessings and the well-being of your family.
- 4 Take the kalash with water. Gently pour the water over the Shiva Lingam, meditating on Lord Shiva and seeking his purity. You can say, "Om Namah Shivaya" silently as you do this. If you have an idol, offer a few drops of water at its base.
- 5 Next, take the raw milk and gently pour it over the Shiva Lingam, again with reverence. Milk represents purity and prosperity, and this offering is believed to bring peace. After offering milk, you can again pour a small amount of water to clean the Lingam.
- 6 Offer bilva leaves, one by one, on the Shiva Lingam; these leaves are considered very sacred to Lord Shiva. Then, offer the fresh flowers to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, placing them respectfully at their feet or on the Lingam.
- 7 Apply sandalwood paste (chandan) and vermillion (roli) on the Shiva Lingam or the idol. Then, offer the fruit or sweets (prasad) you prepared on a small plate before the deity. Lightly sprinkle some water on the prasad as an offering.
- 8 Perform a simple aarti by moving the lit lamp in a circular motion before the deity, ringing a small bell if you have one. Sing a simple prayer or bhajan dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Conclude with folded hands, seeking their blessings for your family's well-being, peace, and fulfillment of desires.
- 9 Observe the fast throughout the day according to your capacity and health. Some devotees abstain from food completely, while others consume only fruits, milk, and water. Dedicate your day to prayer, meditation, and good deeds, keeping your mind focused on the divine.
- 10 In the evening, after performing another small prayer or puja (if desired) and before sunset, you may break your fast with the prasad offered earlier, or a simple sattvic meal. Distribute the prasad among family members and partake of it with gratitude, concluding your Somvar Vrat observance.
