How to Perform Durga Saptashati Path

  1. 1 Begin by cleaning the area where you plan to perform the puja, ensuring it is tidy and peaceful. Take a purifying bath and wear clean, fresh clothes to prepare yourself. Gather all necessary items: the Durga Saptashati book, a picture or idol of Goddess Durga, a lamp, incense sticks, flowers, fruits, sweets, kumkum, haldi, rice grains (akshat), and fresh water.
  2. 2 Place the picture or idol of Goddess Durga on a clean cloth on your altar or puja space; ideally, her face should be towards the east or north. Arrange the lamp, incense sticks, flowers, fruits, and other offerings neatly around the deity. Keep the Durga Saptashati book within easy reach.
  3. 3 Light the lamp (diya) and incense sticks. Sit comfortably in front of the altar, cross-legged if possible. Hold a spoonful of water, a few rice grains, and a flower in your right hand, and silently state your intention for performing the path, such as seeking blessings or protection. After stating your intention, pour the water from your hand onto the ground or in a small plate.
  4. 4 Before starting, offer a simple prayer to Lord Ganesha by placing a flower and a few rice grains before His idol or picture (if available), asking for obstacle removal. Then, offer a flower and a pinch of kumkum to Goddess Durga, gently inviting her divine presence into your puja space.
  5. 5 With a focused mind, open your Durga Saptashati book. You can begin by reciting a simple prayer to the Goddess or directly start with the first chapter. Read the chapters at a comfortable pace, focusing on the sacred sounds and meaning, and continue for as many chapters as you intend to complete in this sitting.
  6. 6 After completing the desired chapters, respectfully close the book. Offer some fresh water (achaman) and a flower to the Goddess, expressing your gratitude and devotion. You may also offer the fruits or sweets you prepared as Prasad at this time.
  7. 7 Light a small camphor piece or a ghee-soaked cotton wick on an Aarti plate and wave it clockwise in front of the Goddess's idol or picture. This act of Aarti shows your devotion with light. After Aarti, bow down with folded hands (Pranam), touching the ground with your forehead, expressing your devotion and asking forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes.
  8. 8 Distribute the fruits and sweets that were offered to the Goddess as Prasad (sanctified food) among all family members and anyone present. Consuming Prasad is believed to bring blessings, peace, and positive energy to all who partake.
