How to Perform Anant Chaturdashi Puja

  1. 1 Begin by cleaning the puja area thoroughly. Arrange the Ganesha idol at the center, and if you have an image or idol of Lord Vishnu, place it alongside. Also, gather all necessary items like a fresh kalash (pot) filled with water, flowers, fruits, sweets, incense sticks, a lamp, an Anant thread (sacred thread with 14 knots), and other puja essentials. Sit comfortably facing East or North on a clean mat or cushion.
  2. 2 Light the lamp and incense sticks, offering a moment of silent prayer to invoke a peaceful atmosphere. Then, hold a spoonful of water in your right palm, along with a flower or a grain of rice, and silently state your intention for performing the Anant Chaturdashi Puja, seeking blessings for your family's well-being and prosperity. Let the water flow onto the ground.
  3. 3 Start by worshipping Lord Ganesha, as this day marks the culmination of Ganesh Chaturthi. Offer water, flowers, a 'modak' or any sweet, and light the lamp and incense before his idol. Recite a simple prayer like "Om Shri Ganeshaya Namah" a few times, expressing gratitude for his presence and seeking his blessings for the smooth completion of the puja.
  4. 4 Now, focus on Lord Vishnu's Ananta (infinite) form. If you have an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu, place it respectfully; otherwise, simply meditate on his form. Offer similar items as to Ganesha: water, flowers, fruits, and sweets. Then, take the Anant thread (the sacred thread with 14 knots) and offer it to Lord Vishnu, touching it to his image/idol, silently praying for eternal peace, protection, and well-being for all.
  5. 5 After offering the Anant thread to Lord Vishnu, men should tie it on their right wrist and women on their left wrist. As you tie it, feel the divine connection and silently reaffirm your devotion to Lord Vishnu, seeking his boundless blessings and protection throughout the year. This thread is a symbol of protection and prosperity.
  6. 6 Conclude the main puja by performing Aarti. Light a camphor or cotton wick dipped in ghee on an Aarti plate, and wave it clockwise in front of Lord Ganesha and Lord Vishnu, singing a simple Aarti song or chanting their names. Afterwards, distribute the offered fruits and sweets (prasad) among all family members, sharing the blessings received.
  7. 7 Finally, it's time for Lord Ganesha's farewell. With a heavy heart but full of gratitude, gently lift the Ganesha idol and immerse it in a clean water body (like a river, lake, or or even a large bucket at home if no natural source is available). Silently pray for his return next year and thank him for his presence and blessings.
