How to Perform Onam Home Puja

  1. 1 Choose a clean, quiet spot in your home, preferably facing East or North. Clean the area thoroughly. Place a clean cloth or mat on the floor or a small altar. Arrange a picture or idol of Lord Vishnu (as Vamana) and King Mahabali if available. Gather all your puja items like a lamp (nilavilakku or any traditional lamp), oil, wicks, incense sticks, camphor, flowers, fruits, betel leaves, and a small pot of water.
  2. 2 Start by drawing a small circle on the clean floor in front of your chosen deity/picture. Arrange fresh flowers petals in beautiful patterns to create a Pookalam (floral carpet). This is a central element of Onam celebrations, symbolizing prosperity, happiness, and the welcoming of King Mahabali. Families often make this together as a joyful activity.
  3. 3 Sit comfortably facing the puja area, preferably cross-legged, with a calm mind. Light the traditional lamp (nilavilakku or any oil lamp) using a matchstick or lighter. As you light it, silently offer a prayer for knowledge, purity, and the well-being of your family, welcoming King Mahabali into your home. Ensure the lamp burns throughout the puja.
  4. 4 Light a few incense sticks and place them in a stand near the lamp. Let their fragrance purify the atmosphere. Then, take a small amount of water in a spoon or your right hand from the small pot and offer it towards the deity/picture, symbolizing purification and respectful welcome. You can also sprinkle a few drops of water around the puja area.
  5. 5 Offer fresh flowers, especially those locally available and fragrant, by gently placing them at the feet of the deity/picture. You can also offer betel leaves and nuts. Then, arrange various fruits and traditional Onam delicacies (like Sarkaravaratti or banana chips) as an offering (Naivedyam) to King Mahabali, expressing gratitude for abundance.
  6. 6 Close your eyes for a few moments, or gaze at the lamp flame. Silently express your devotion, gratitude for the harvest, prosperity, and ask for King Mahabali's blessings for peace, well-being, and continued abundance for your family and community. This is a time for personal connection and reflection.
  7. 7 Place a small piece of camphor on a plate or a small camphor holder and light it. Gently wave the lit camphor clockwise in front of the deity/picture, moving your right hand in a circular motion. This is the Aarti, a ritual of showing devotion. After waving, let everyone in the family pass their hands over the flame and touch their eyes, symbolizing receiving blessings.
  8. 8 The fruits and delicacies offered during the puja are now considered blessed Prasad. Distribute this Prasad among all family members and any guests present. Eating Prasad is believed to bring good fortune and blessings. Share it with joy and reverence.
  9. 9 After distributing Prasad, you can offer a final silent prayer, expressing thanks for the successful completion of the puja and for the blessings received. Gently extinguish the lamp if it's an oil lamp, or let it burn out naturally if it's designed to do so. Clean up the puja area respectfully once the lamp is fully out.
