How to Perform Bhai Dooj Puja

  1. 1 Begin by preparing your puja thali. Gather all necessary items: a small lamp (diya) with ghee and a wick, roli (red vermillion powder), akshat (uncooked rice grains), a betel leaf, a betel nut, some sweets (mithai), a coin, a small container of water, a coconut (nariyal), and a protective thread (kalava or raksha sutra). Ensure all items are clean and ready for use.
  2. 2 Choose a clean and peaceful spot in your home for the puja. Cleanse this area thoroughly, perhaps by wiping it down and sprinkling a few drops of Ganga jal (holy water) if available. Place a comfortable mat or 'asan' for your brother to sit on, ensuring it faces towards the East or North for auspiciousness.
  3. 3 The sister should take a purifying bath and wear clean, festive clothes, preparing herself with a positive and loving heart. The brother should also take a bath and be ready to sit for the puja, symbolizing his readiness to receive blessings. Both should be mentally present and focused on the sacred occasion.
  4. 4 Light the ghee lamp (diya) placed in your puja thali. While lighting it, you can silently pray for the well-being, long life, and prosperity of your brother and family. This act symbolizes dispelling darkness and inviting divine light and blessings into your lives.
  5. 5 Request your brother to sit comfortably on the 'asan' you have prepared. He should face the East or North direction. As he sits, ensure he is relaxed and ready to participate in the ritual. This marks the formal beginning of the Bhai Dooj ceremony.
  6. 6 With a loving heart, the sister should apply a tilak on her brother's forehead. Use your ring finger to apply the roli (red vermillion) first, making a small, neat mark between his eyebrows. This tilak symbolizes your blessings, protection, and good wishes for his life and happiness.
  7. 7 After applying the tilak, gently place a few grains of akshat (uncooked rice) over the tilak on his forehead. Then, offer him some sweets (mithai) from the thali, inviting him to partake in the joyous occasion. This act signifies abundance, prosperity, and the sharing of happiness.
  8. 8 Take the small container of water and gently sprinkle a few drops around your brother or offer a few sips if he wishes. Optionally, you can also offer a coconut (nariyal) to him, which is considered auspicious and a symbol of good fortune. This further invokes purity and blessings.
  9. 9 Hold the lit diya in your right hand and gently wave it in a clockwise circular motion in front of your brother, performing a simple Aarti. As you do this, silently offer a heartfelt prayer for his long life, good health, success, and protection from all harm. Conclude by touching his feet or seeking his blessings.
  10. 10 Following the puja, the brother traditionally offers a gift to his sister, expressing his love and gratitude. In return, he often pledges to protect and support her throughout life. This exchange strengthens the bond and reaffirms their mutual love and respect.
