Naag Panchami Puja is an auspicious Hindu ritual dedicated to the worship of serpent deities, known as Naag Devta. Observed primarily on the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright half of the lunar month of Shraavana, this home worship is traditionally performed to seek protection from snake bites, fear of serpents, and other potential harms. Devotees offer milk, sweets, flowers, and prayers to images or idols of snakes, believing it brings good fortune, prosperity, and safeguards the family from negativity and evil influences.

How to Perform Naag Panchami Puja
- 1 Clean the designated puja area thoroughly. Arrange an image or idol of Naag Devta on a clean cloth. Gather all puja items: a small bowl of milk, sweets (like kheer or laddoo), fresh flowers, turmeric (haldi), vermillion (kumkum), unbroken rice grains (akshat), a lamp (diya) with ghee or oil, incense sticks (agarbatti), a water pot (kalash), and a small bell.
- 2 Sit comfortably facing east or north, on a clean mat or asana. Light the lamp and incense sticks, placing them in front of the Naag Devta image. Silently pray for the well-being and protection of your family as you light them.
- 3 Take a spoonful of water from the kalash in your right hand, sip it, and repeat this three times for purification (achaman). Then, hold a little water, rice, and a flower in your right hand, and silently make your intention (sankalpa) for performing this puja for the family's welfare, protection from harm, and blessings of Naag Devta. Let the items flow into a plate.
- 4 Ring the bell gently and invoke Naag Devta, inviting them to accept your worship. Offer a few drops of water from the kalash, then sprinkle some turmeric, kumkum, and unbroken rice grains onto the image or idol, symbolizing respect and welcome.
- 5 With devotion, offer the milk to Naag Devta by gently pouring a small amount in front of or onto the image. This offering is considered very sacred. Then, place the sweets near the idol, expressing your gratitude and devotion.
- 6 Offer fresh flowers to Naag Devta. Show the lit incense sticks by circling them clockwise in front of the deity, then do the same with the lit lamp (dhoop-deep). After showing the lamp, place it back.
- 7 With folded hands, offer your prayers to Naag Devta, asking for their blessings, protection from all fears and negativities, and the well-being of your family. You can then perform a simple aarti by gently waving the lit lamp in a circular motion in front of the deity, while ringing the bell.
- 8 After the aarti, bow down respectfully before Naag Devta, seeking forgiveness for any unintended mistakes in the puja. Take a little water and offer it to the ground, symbolizing completion. Distribute the offered sweets (prasad) among family members and others as a blessing.
