How to Perform Gudi Padwa / Ugadi Puja
- 1 On the morning of Gudi Padwa/Ugadi, wake up early, take a purifying bath, and wear clean clothes. Clean your home thoroughly, especially the puja area, and decorate it with rangoli at the entrance. Prepare your mind for devotion and celebration.
- 2 For Gudi Padwa, prepare the Gudi by tying a new, bright cloth (sari or dhoti) to a bamboo stick. Decorate it with neem leaves, mango leaves, a garland of flowers, and a sugar candy garland (batasha haar). Place an inverted silver or copper pot (kalash) on top. Erect this Gudi outside your main door, facing east, and offer a small prayer for prosperity. For Ugadi, focus on decorating the entrance with mango leaves and placing a decorated pot (kalash) inside the home as a symbol of welcome.
- 3 In your designated puja area, clean a small table or raised platform. Spread a fresh cloth, place images or idols of your family deities (usually Ganesha, Lakshmi, Vishnu or your Kula Devata). Place a small amount of rice or grains in front of them for support.
- 4 Place a copper or brass kalash (pot) filled with water, a few drops of Ganga Jal (holy water if available), a coin, a betel nut, and a flower. Place five mango leaves on the mouth of the kalash and then a coconut (with its husk) on top of the leaves, pointing upwards. This kalash symbolizes divine presence and prosperity.
- 5 Sit comfortably facing the deities, ideally facing East or North. Light a ghee lamp (diya) and incense sticks. As you light them, silently offer your respects and ask for the well-being and prosperity of your family throughout the new year.
- 6 Begin by offering a flower and a pinch of akshat (rice grains) to Lord Ganesha, seeking his blessings to remove obstacles from the puja. Then, take a small amount of water in your right palm, state your intention for performing the Gudi Padwa/Ugadi puja for your family's health, prosperity, and happiness, and then release the water onto the ground. This is your Sankalpa (vow).
- 7 Offer fresh flowers, turmeric (haldi), vermillion (kumkum), and akshat (rice grains) to all the deities on the altar. You can gently place them at their feet or on the platform in front of them, expressing your devotion and gratitude.
- 8 Offer the special festive dishes prepared for the day, such as Puran Poli (for Gudi Padwa) or Ugadi Pachadi (for Ugadi), along with fruits and sweets. Place them on a clean plate in front of the deities. Silently pray for the acceptance of your offerings and for blessings of abundance.
- 9 Light a camphor or a small wick dipped in ghee on an Aarti plate. Circulate the Aarti plate clockwise in front of the deities, ringing a small bell if available. All family members can join in this prayer, bowing their heads in reverence.
- 10 After the Aarti, distribute the offered Naivedya (Prasad) to all family members and anyone present. Consume a small portion of the Ugadi Pachadi (if Ugadi) or other sweet immediately after the puja, as it symbolizes accepting all tastes of life in the new year.
- 11 For Gudi Padwa, usually in the evening or the next morning, carefully lower the Gudi. Remove all the decorations and offer a final prayer of gratitude for the blessings received throughout the day. The cloth, leaves, and other items can be immersed in a river or disposed of respectfully.
