How to Perform Dhanteras Puja
- 1 Begin by thoroughly cleaning your home, especially the area where you plan to perform the puja, as cleanliness is crucial for inviting divine energies. Gather all the necessary items: idols or pictures of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera (and optionally Lord Ganesha), a clean red cloth, a kalash, water, mango leaves, coconut, rice, kumkum, haldi, sandalwood paste, flowers, fruits, sweets, milk, ghee, diyas, wicks, oil, incense, camphor, betel leaves and nuts, coins, and any new gold, silver, or utensils purchased for Dhanteras.
- 2 Place a clean red or yellow cloth on a slightly raised platform or a small table. In the center of this cloth, make a small heap of raw rice. Carefully place the idols or pictures of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera (with Lord Ganesha typically to Lakshmi's right) on this rice heap. Fill a kalash with water, place five mango leaves around its neck, and a coconut on its mouth, then place it near the deities.
- 3 Light a ghee diya (lamp) and a few incense sticks (agarbatti), placing them near the deities. Sit comfortably, facing the altar. Before proceeding, take a moment to silently express your intention to perform this Dhanteras Puja for the prosperity, well-being, and blessings of wealth for yourself and your entire family.
- 4 Always begin any auspicious Hindu ritual by worshipping Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles. Offer him a small pinch of rice, a flower, a little kumkum, and a sweet from your offerings. You can simply fold your hands and silently pray, 'Om Shri Ganeshaya Namaha,' asking for the smooth and successful completion of your puja.
- 5 Now, turn your attention to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera. Gently sprinkle a few drops of water on their idols or pictures. Offer them kumkum (red powder), haldi (turmeric powder), sandalwood paste, and fresh flowers. Place a betel leaf with a betel nut (supari) on it in front of each deity.
- 6 Offer the prepared sweets, fresh fruits, and a small bowl of milk to the deities. If you have purchased any new gold, silver, or utensils on this auspicious Dhanteras day, place these items respectfully in front of the idols as a symbolic offering, signifying the welcoming of new wealth and abundance into your home.
- 7 With folded hands, close your eyes and spend a few moments in silent prayer. Offer your heartfelt gratitude to Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity and wealth, and to Lord Kubera for the management and protection of your financial well-being. Focus on feelings of abundance, gratitude, and positive energy for your family's future.
- 8 Light a small piece of camphor or use a small ghee diya for performing Aarti. Wave the lit lamp in a slow, clockwise circular motion in front of the deities, typically while reciting or playing a devotional Aarti song. After completing the Aarti, gently pass your hands over the flame and touch your eyes and head, symbolizing receiving the divine blessings.
- 9 Distribute the sweets and fruits that were offered as Prasad to all family members present. Sharing Prasad signifies the distribution of blessings and positive energy among everyone, fostering unity and well-being within the family.
- 10 In the evening, after the main puja, light an extra diya (lamp) with oil. This lamp should ideally be a four-faced lamp and placed facing south outside your main door or in the courtyard. This special Deep Daan (lamp offering) is dedicated to Lord Yama, the deity of death, to seek his blessings for the prevention of untimely death within the family.
