Karva Chauth is a significant Hindu vrat primarily observed by married women, particularly in North India. On the fourth day of the Krishna Paksha in the Kartik month, women undertake a day-long fast without food or water to pray for the long life, good health, and prosperity of their husbands. The fast is traditionally broken after sighting the moon in the evening, followed by offering Arghya to Chandra Dev and performing the Karva Chauth Puja. Many traditions also include listening to or reciting the Karva Chauth Vrat Katha during the day.

How to Perform Karva Chauth

  1. 1 Wake up before sunrise for Sargi. This is a special meal prepared by your mother-in-law or husband. Eat it to sustain yourself through the day-long fast without food or water. After eating, get ready for the day's fasting ritual.
  2. 2 After Sargi and before sunrise, sit comfortably facing East. Take a small amount of water in your right palm, close your eyes, and silently take a vow (Sankalp) to observe the fast with dedication for your husband's long life and well-being. Sprinkle the water on the ground.
  3. 3 Observe a strict fast throughout the day without consuming any food or water (Nirjala Vrat). Dedicate your thoughts to the well-being of your husband and family. You can engage in daily activities but avoid strenuous tasks.
  4. 4 In the late afternoon or evening, prepare the puja thali. Include a Karva (earthen pot) filled with water, a small diya (lamp), incense sticks, kumkum, rice, a sieve (chalni), some sweets like matthi, fruits, and flowers. Place an idol or picture of Shiv-Parvati and Ganesha on a clean altar.
  5. 5 Light the diya and incense sticks. Sit comfortably with your puja thali. Either listen to the Karva Chauth Vrat Katha (story) from an elder, or read it yourself. The story explains the significance and benefits of the fast. Pray for your husband's health and longevity during this time.
  6. 6 After the Katha, perform a short puja. Offer kumkum, rice, and flowers to Shiv-Parvati and Ganesha. You can also offer the sweets and fruits. Light the diya and circulate it clockwise (Aarti) in front of the deities while praying silently for your family's well-being. Apply kumkum on your forehead.
  7. 7 Once the moon rises, go to an open area from where it's visible. With the sieve, look at the moon and then immediately at your husband's face. Offer water from your Karva to the moon (Arghya) by pouring it slowly towards the moon. Pray for your husband's long life and health.
  8. 8 After offering Arghya, your husband should offer you the first sip of water from the Karva to break your fast. He may also offer you the first bite of a sweet. This formally concludes your day-long fasting ritual.
  9. 9 Take blessings from your husband and any elders present by touching their feet. Afterwards, you can have a full meal. This completes the Karva Chauth vrat.
