How to Perform Mauni Amavasya

  1. 1 Wake up early on Mauni Amavasya. After cleaning yourself, take a purifying bath, ideally adding a few drops of Ganga water if available, or just regular clean water. Wear clean, fresh clothes and ensure your puja space is tidy.
  2. 2 Sit comfortably facing East. Hold a little water in your right palm and state your intention for observing Mauni Amavasya, like "I observe this Mauni Amavasya vrat for spiritual growth and peace." Then, gently pour the water onto the ground. From this moment, commit to observing silence (Maun Vrat) as much as possible throughout the day.
  3. 3 Stand facing the rising sun. Hold a pot or glass of water, optionally with a pinch of black sesame seeds (til) and a few drops of milk, in both hands. Offer this water slowly to the sun, letting it fall to the ground, while silently praying for health and prosperity. After this, you may also offer a small amount of black sesame seeds, jaggery, or other simple items to a cow or birds as charity.
  4. 4 At your clean puja space, place an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu. Light a ghee lamp and an incense stick. Offer a few flowers, a tulsi leaf (basil), and some fruits or sweets to Lord Vishnu. Silently meditate on Lord Vishnu, seeking blessings for peace and well-being for your family.
  5. 5 Amavasya is significant for ancestors. Take a clean vessel with water, a few black sesame seeds, and a little Ganga Jal if possible. Stand facing South. Hold the vessel and pour the water slowly, letting it flow through your right thumb (touching the water) to the ground, three times. Silently pray for the peace and liberation of your ancestors.
  6. 6 Throughout the day, try to observe silence (Maun Vrat) as much as possible. Engage in acts of charity according to your capacity; this could be donating food, clothes, or money to the needy. Spend some time in quiet meditation or contemplation, reflecting on your inner self and spiritual growth.
  7. 7 In the evening, after the day's observances, you can light the lamp again and perform a simple Aarti for Lord Vishnu. Offer your gratitude for a successful Mauni Amavasya observance. If you have kept a fast, you can break it after the evening prayers, consuming light, sattvic food.
