How to Perform Navratri Puja

  1. 1 Begin by cleaning the puja area thoroughly and taking a bath. Gather all necessary items like the idol or picture of Goddess Durga, a red cloth, a kalash (copper or brass pot), rice, coconut, flowers, kumkum, haldi, incense sticks, a diya (lamp), ghee, sweets or fruits for prasad, and fresh water.
  2. 2 Spread a clean red cloth on your puja altar. Place the idol or picture of Goddess Durga on it. In front, prepare a small bed of rice, and place the kalash filled with water on it. Decorate the kalash with mango leaves and place a coconut on its mouth. This symbolizes the presence of the Goddess.
  3. 3 Light the ghee diya (lamp) and place it on the altar. Keep it burning throughout the puja. As you light it, silently pray for the removal of darkness and the presence of light and purity in your home and life.
  4. 4 Take a little water in your right palm, add a flower and a few grains of rice. Hold it in front of the Goddess and mentally state your intention for performing the puja, for example, for the well-being of your family or for spiritual growth. Then, let the water flow onto the ground or in a plate.
  5. 5 Before worshipping Goddess Durga, first offer a small prayer to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Offer a flower, a pinch of kumkum, and a few rice grains to his idol or picture, seeking his blessings for a successful and obstacle-free puja.
  6. 6 Now, focus your devotion on Goddess Durga. With folded hands, silently invite her divine presence to reside in your altar. Offer fresh water for her to symbolically bathe and drink, then offer fresh flowers, kumkum, haldi, sindoor, and some rice grains to her idol or picture, placing them gently at her feet.
  7. 7 Light the incense sticks (agarbatti) and wave them in front of the Goddess in a clockwise direction. Then, show the lit ghee diya to her, circulating it gently. Let the fragrance fill the air, symbolizing your devotion and prayers reaching the heavens.
  8. 8 Offer the prepared sweets or fruits (prasad) to Goddess Durga. Place them reverently in front of her idol or picture. You can offer a small glass of water alongside the food. Pray that she accepts your humble offering.
  9. 9 Sit quietly for some time, meditating on the Goddess. You can chant a simple mantra like 'Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Vichche' or simply offer your heartfelt prayers and devotion to her. Feel her divine energy filling your home.
  10. 10 Light an aarti lamp (or use the main diya) and with both hands, gently wave it clockwise in front of Goddess Durga, singing an aarti song. After the aarti, wave your hands over the flame and then touch your eyes and head, absorbing the sacred energy.
  11. 11 Bow down before the Goddess, touching your forehead to the ground, expressing your gratitude and seeking her blessings. Conclude by silently asking for forgiveness for any mistakes made during the puja, knowing that your devotion is what truly matters.
  12. 12 Finally, distribute the offered prasad (sweets, fruits) among all family members and friends. Share the blessings of the Goddess with everyone. You can also offer a small portion to other living beings if you wish.
