How to Perform Ram Navami

  1. 1 Begin by cleaning your home, especially the puja area, thoroughly. Take a purifying bath and wear clean clothes. Arrange all your puja items neatly on a clean cloth or small table, facing East or North if possible.
  2. 2 Place the idol or picture of Lord Rama in the center of your puja area. To its right, place a ghee lamp (diya) and to its left, place incense sticks (agarbatti) in a stand. Ensure you have fresh flowers ready for offering.
  3. 3 Sit comfortably on a mat (aasan) facing the deity. Hold a small amount of rice and a few drops of water in your right palm. Close your eyes briefly and silently resolve to perform this puja for your family's well-being and devotion to Lord Rama, then place the rice and water back down.
  4. 4 Light the ghee lamp and the incense sticks. Let the gentle glow of the lamp symbolize divine presence and the fragrance of the incense purify the atmosphere. Ring a small bell briefly to invoke auspiciousness.
  5. 5 Offer fresh flowers to Lord Rama. Apply a 'tilak' of kumkum (red powder) and chandan (sandalwood paste) on the forehead of the idol/picture. Silently offer your respect and invite Lord Rama's presence into your home.
  6. 6 Offer fruits, sweets, or any homemade 'prasad' you have prepared. Place these offerings reverently before the deity. You can also offer a glass of water, symbolizing refreshment.
  7. 7 At this point, it is auspicious to recite a chapter from the Ramayana, especially the 'Bal Kand' which describes Lord Rama's birth, or chant the mantra "Om Sri Ramaya Namah" a few times. You may also sing a devotional bhajan dedicated to Lord Rama.
  8. 8 Hold a small plate with a lit camphor or ghee lamp in your right hand. Slowly wave it clockwise in front of Lord Rama's idol/picture while singing the Aarti. After completing the Aarti, gently pass your hands over the flame and then touch them to your eyes and head, symbolizing blessings.
  9. 9 Fold your hands in prayer, express your gratitude, and seek blessings for peace, prosperity, and spiritual well-being for your family. Finally, distribute the offered fruits and sweets (prasad) among all family members and share it with others if possible.
