Step-by-Step Vidhi • विधि

How to Perform Vehicle Puja

  1. 1 Begin by gathering all necessary puja items: a small idol or picture of your chosen deity (like Ganesha or your family deity), kumkum (red vermillion), haldi (turmeric powder), fresh flowers, incense sticks (agarbatti), an oil lamp (diya) with oil and wick, camphor (kapoor), a clean cloth, water in a small pot, a coconut, fruits, and sweets. Also, keep a small plate for offerings and a matchbox or lighter ready. Ensure the vehicle is clean inside and out.
  2. 2 Choose a suitable, clean spot for the puja, ideally near the front of your vehicle. Place the deity idol or picture on a clean cloth or a small stool. Arrange all other puja items neatly on the plate in front of the deity. Sit comfortably, facing the deity and the vehicle, ready to begin the ritual with a calm and devoted mind.
  3. 3 Light the oil lamp (diya) and a few incense sticks. Place the lit lamp in front of the deity and the incense sticks in a stand. Silently offer a prayer to the divine for positivity, peace, and the successful completion of your puja. This sets a sacred atmosphere and invites auspicious energies.
  4. 4 Take a small amount of kumkum and haldi powder. Mix a few drops of water to make a paste. Apply a small tilak (mark) on the forehead of the deity idol/picture. Then, apply tilak on the steering wheel, dashboard, and front bonnet of the vehicle. You may also apply a small tilak on the vehicle's headlights or mirrors, symbolizing protection and good fortune.
  5. 5 Offer fresh flowers to the deity by gently placing them at the idol's feet. Then, take some flowers and gently place them on the dashboard or steering wheel of the vehicle. You can also sprinkle a few petals over the vehicle. This act signifies respect and beauty, inviting blessings.
  6. 6 Place the fruits and sweets you have prepared in front of the deity and also near the vehicle as an offering. This is a symbolic gesture of gratitude and sharing, seeking divine grace for abundance and well-being. These offerings will later be distributed as 'prasad'.
  7. 7 Take a sacred red thread, often called 'Mauli' or 'Kalava'. Tie this thread securely around the steering wheel or a prominent, visible part of the vehicle, like the gear stick or rear-view mirror. This thread acts as a protective shield, warding off negative energies and ensuring safe journeys.
  8. 8 Place the coconut in front of one of the vehicle's front wheels. With a single, firm strike, break the coconut on the ground. This act is believed to break any obstacles or negative energies associated with the vehicle and its journeys, paving the way for smooth and trouble-free travels.
  9. 9 Light a piece of camphor (kapoor) on a small plate. Hold the plate and gently move the flame in a circular motion clockwise in front of the deity, and then around the front of your vehicle. This is 'Aarti', performed to express devotion and seek blessings. As you do this, silently pray for the vehicle's safety, longevity, and for safe travels for everyone who uses it.
  10. 10 Once the puja is complete, offer a final respectful bow or namaste to the deity. Distribute the fruits and sweets that were offered as 'prasad' to all family members and anyone present. Start the vehicle's engine or take it for a short, gentle drive, marking the successful completion of the puja and the beginning of auspicious journeys.
