How to Perform Tulsi Puja
- 1 Begin by cleaning the area around your Tulsi plant. Gather all necessary puja items like water, lamp, incense, flowers, and prasad. Sit comfortably facing the Tulsi plant, cross-legged on a mat or cushion. Take a moment to calm your mind and silently set your intention for the puja, asking for blessings for your family.
- 2 Light the lamp (diya) with oil or ghee, placing it near the Tulsi plant. Then, light the incense sticks (agarbatti or dhoop) and place them in their holder. Allow their fragrance to fill the atmosphere, symbolizing purity and devotion.
- 3 Hold the water pot (lota/kalash) in your right hand. Slowly offer water to the base of the Tulsi plant while chanting a simple prayer or mantra in your mind, such as "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" or just "Jai Tulsi Maiya." Pour the water gently and reverently.
- 4 Dip your ring finger of your right hand into kumkum, haldi, or chandan. Apply a small tilak on the stem or a leaf of the Tulsi plant. Then, take a few grains of uncooked rice (akshat) and gently sprinkle them over the plant.
- 5 Wrap a small piece of red thread (moli/kalawa) around the stem of the Tulsi plant, symbolizing new clothes. Then, offer fresh flowers, placing them lovingly near the base of the plant or on its leaves.
- 6 Place the sweets or fruits you have prepared as prasad near the Tulsi plant. Silently offer them to the Goddess Tulsi, asking her to accept your devotion and bless your family with health and prosperity.
- 7 Light a small camphor piece or another wick in a small plate (aarti plate). Hold the plate in both hands and gently move it in a clockwise circular motion around the Tulsi plant while singing a simple Aarti or devotional song, or simply focusing on your prayer. After Aarti, extinguish the flame and offer your obeisance.
- 8 Stand up and gently circumambulate the Tulsi plant three or seven times in a clockwise direction, if space permits. As you walk, hold your hands in a prayer posture and offer your final prayers for peace, happiness, and well-being.
- 9 Conclude the puja by distributing the offered prasad to all family members and anyone present. Share the blessings and positive energy generated during the puja.
